Tronoto based Stusio B.I.B (Black is Beautiful) set out on a mission to build the largest collection of black markers in the world. And if that wasnt enough he intends to draw each and every single one to scale. Allister Lee (the patient designer) calls his collection of drawn markers Black Marker B.I.B.L.E. The collection started in 2002 and by the beginning of this year has reached 523 unique black markers, and its till growing!

Now that requires some patience... what if he messes one up? does he redo it all over again??

Dubai's Abandoned Cars

The brilliant campaign by Saatchi & Saatchi for the metro in Dubai, used the abandoned cars in the city, by writing messages like "I havent left Dubai, I just love the metro!" to advertise that they prefer using the metro instead! The campaign won the Grand Prix award in the Dubai Lynx 2010 for the outdoor category.

The designers suggest that the sourced energy can be used to completely sustain the store for the month. A month seems to be too far fetched don't you think?

It looks remarkably uncomfortable, and with a top speed of 4 miles per hour it wouldn’t be hard to walk faster than this thing can take you. But at 22 pounds, it’s light enough to load into the trunk of your car so that you can avoid any actual walking at all. As pointed out by Britain’s Daily Mail, this smacks of Wall-E-esque future laziness. Do we really need yet another device that allows us to be lazy? According to Honda, the unicycles are meant to be used by the elderly, who may have mobility problems. However, a unicycle steered by body weight distribution may not be the best solution for seniors who aren’t able to walk steadily. In fact, it seems almost intentionally dangerous.

But the technology is pretty cool though!

There is a message in Locke’s madness. Apart from a cool, humorous nostalgia, Locke asserts that many of the once hi-tech “species” went extinct thanks to “runaway consumerism and wastefulness at the high end of the food chain.”

LED technology on the streets

sweatshoppe has taken LED technology to the streets on a different level. The collective made up of video artist bruno levy and blake shaw who are also multimedia performers, use video mapping techniques as a means of video painting onto walls through the use of a paint roller. The only catch is, the paint roller doesn't actually paint anything onto the wall. Instead it is made from green LEDs which work in conjunction with a camera next to a projector which is programmed with software that tracks its movements. the software then outputs the X-Y position of the roller projecting a textured video image of the strokes the duo are drawing on a wall. this interactive technology allows them to explore the relationship between video, mark making and architecture.

Spectators have always chalked messages of support along the Tour de France route - how about using the web to bring the roads of Franceto everyone and spread messages of hope in the fight against cancer?

A unique project to support Nike's Livestrong campaign which saw messages of hope in the fight against cancer chalked along the Tour de France route was done by Wieden+Kennedy Portland and development partners DeepLocal and Standard Robot, Nike created a giant robotic writing tool.

Over the course of the 15-day event Chalkbot (chalk writing machine) picked up more than 4,000 followers on Twitter and received more than 36,000 texts and twitter messages!

In 2008 the average American consumed 95,834 kilowatt hours of energy, most of which would have come from the burning of fossil fuels. But if our energy use had a more direct impact on our bodies, would we think more about what we consume?
The Blood Lamp, made by Netherlands-based designer Mike Thompson, poses just such a question.

The lamp is a single-use light bulb, filled with Luminol, a chemical used at crime scenes to reveal bloodstains.

Luminol is usually clear, but adding human blood produces a bright blue light as the liquid reacts with the oxygen-carrying pigment haemoglobin.

Mike says the single-use design, and inherent cost to the individual, means the user must "consider when light is needed the most, forcing them to rethink how wasteful they are with energy, and how precious it is."

Now this is a new concept for me, but I think its fantastic and it really got to me. (yay I think I finally found another theme for my final year project)

Found Cuttlery

By found they mean you can make cuttlery out of plastic bottles you already have at home, a way of recycling your plastic bottles and making more cuttlery for that dinner you have tomorrow. Spanish designer Oscar Diaz worked on a series called “Found” where he produced a range of super-light flatware cut straight from the bottle. The fork, knife and spoon takes the bottles’ angles and curves and comes with an already designed grip that makes them easy to pick up and eat from.

The lego house built for the TV presenter James May has now been demolished after a deal to sell it fell through. Apparently the house did not have planning permision to be built on that particular site, and they were hoping to find a buyer to transport the house elsewhere. LEGOland was one of the interested buyers but the 3.3 million LEGO house was too expensive to transport. What a waste of time I believe! But atleast they're donating all the LEGO pieces to charity! (I'm sure the kids will be happy)

Designers Dohyun Ryu, Junghyun Joo, Kyungyoung Lee & Taehong Park came up with this concept of a handle (the ones used in the underground trains) that are also emergency light torches that come off at the push of a button. The flashlight handles will light up when the lights go out in the train. Before people get panicky when the lights blank out, these flashlights will reassure the commuters a lot more confidence to deal with the situation.

As a child you build these lego houses, everytime wishing it was big enough to live in, but it never is... Well in this case, this LEGO house is every little childs dream house, built entirely out of legos. James May, host of a new BBC series called James May’s Toy Stories had to wait until adulthood, but he’s finally fulfilling that dream. James intends to live in the world’s first life-size Lego house for a few days – “or until it falls down,” according to him. The house is being built in Surrey. Construction began on August 17th, with more than 2000 people helping in the construction of the plastic house, which is two stories tall and includes working doors, a bedroom, toilet, shower and staircase.

This Ink calendar by designer Oscar Diaz is a mind blowing calendar concept which uses the capillary action of ink spreading across paper to print the current date.

“The ink is absorbed slowly, and the numbers in the calendar are “printed” daily. One a day, they are filled with ink until the end of the month. A calendar self-updated, which enhances the perception of time passing and not only signaling it. The ink colors are based on a spectrum, which relate to a “color temperature scale”, each month having a color related to our perception of the whether on that month. The colors range from dark blue in December to, three shades of green in spring or oranges, red in the summer.”

A multifunctional shopping trolley

Here are just a few uses for a shopping trolley that I've come across...

1. The normal shopping trolley where you carry your groceries through the supermarket and later transport them to your car. (If your lazy enough and you dont want to carry your groceries home, you can go beyond the red line and take the trolley home, there is no such thing as an alarm that will go off)

2. As means of transportation through the crowded streets of Cairo

3. Why invest in a BBQ grill, when you can have this shopping trolley for a pound?

4. Trolleys made their way into sculptures. The British artist Abigail Fallis has created the first model of DNA made of shopping trolleys entitled DNA DL90.

5. They even made their way to the recycling world. Ptolemy Elrington made the sculptures from discarded shopping trolleys pulled out of rivers by RiverCare volunteers.

6. Shopping cart chairs - Reestore are a company who 'take everyday waste objects and cheekily turn them into charming yet functional pieces of furniture and accessories' and their converted shopping cart chairs are a perfect example of the quality of their work

7. The shopping cart/ Bicycle Hybrid. The Cartrider is an invention from Korean designer Jaebeom Jeong which combines a shopping cart with a bicycle, resulting in a rideable goods carrier which is supposed to make shopping a less punishing task

din-ink designed by andrea cingoli, paolo emilio bellisario, cristian cellini, francesca fontana from Italy was one of the winners for a design competition organized by designboom under the theme dining in 2015 (at work, while traveling or at home). This design allows you to turn your favourite office tool - your ballpoint pen - into common cuttlery (also a good excuse to bite the cap now!) All you do is replace your normal cap during lunch time. The caps are made out of natural starch and fibres and are 100% biodegradable.

When Japanese farmers become artists

A group of farmers in Japan have created these beautiful murals from planting different colours of rice in their paddy fields. Believe it or not these farmers sketched out their designs on their computers so that they knew exactly where every coloured seed needs to be planted. Paddy field artwork is actually a tradition that began in 1993 in the village of Inakadate, north of Tokyo. It all started as a project to revitalise the local economy.

When Google Maps becomes useful for typography

These were the results for a project by Rhett Dashwood that started in October 2008 until April 2009 which was aimed at searching Google Maps hoping to discover land formations that resembled letters. These finding are all located within the state of Victoria in Australia.

Are you creative? then you can stay here for free!Creators Inn is a joint project between the swedish fashion brand elvine and the design agency The Next Century Modern. The idea of this project is to give free short term accomodation to creative individuals! Aren't we lucky!

Based in Gothenburg Sweden, the aim of this inn is to attract creative people to contribute to the cultural life of the city and promote the local area. All you have to do is go online and explain why you deserve a free room at the inn! (I have already started working on my portfolio).. The project has also expanded to Stockholm recently!

Directed by Masashi Kawamura + Hal Kirkland + Magico Nakamura + Masayoshi Nakamura, this highly amusing music video was shot for Sour's 'Hibi no Neiro' (Tone of everyday) for their first mini album 'Water Flavor EP'. The cast were selected from the actual Sour fan base from all over the world. It was all filmed purely via their webcams!

Designed by Brenda Durham is this 'XTRA time' clock. This clock (still not sure how it exactly works) bends and stretches time, as long as the user stays within the same 24 hour frame. By pressing a button, your one hour lunch break will last for two! The joy!

This clock was the winning design for the A-Z list of products that Selfridges might sell in 100 years! While 'XTRA time' was for the letter X, the letter A was an Airbag Helmet, which inflates on impact (I'm just suggesting that london bikers might probably need that a little earlier that 2109).

If you want to see them for yourself, all 26 products are currently displayed at Selfridges until the end of the month.
